Called Back After a Breast Cancer Screening in Japan: What One Week Taught Me About Health
Do You Get Regular Health Checkups?
A month ago, during my city’s annual health screening, I was told I needed additional testing after my breast cancer screening.
In this article, I’d like to share my experience—from the community health checkup to the follow-up examination and finally receiving my results.
What Should You Wear?

After going through the screening myself, I highly recommend wearing a long skirt and a slightly thicker T-shirt.
For the cervical cancer screening, you’ll need to remove your underwear, so wearing a skirt makes you feel much more comfortable. For the breast screening, you’ll only need to remove your top, making it easier to change as well.
Community Health Screening Day

In my city, we receive an invitation for an annual health screening once a year.
On June 30, I had both a cervical cancer screening and a breast cancer screening.
First, a nurse explained the procedures and asked about my medical history, previous screenings, and whether I was currently seeing a doctor.
Cervical Cancer Screening
The cervical cancer screening takes place inside a mobile screening bus.
You remove your underwear before the exam. Since several women may be waiting inside the bus, wearing a skirt helps you stay covered.

The examination itself lasted only about 30 seconds.
Breast Cancer Screening
The breast screening also took place in a mobile screening bus.

I removed only my upper clothing and had an ultrasound examination.
I noticed that one side took much longer than the other. The technician repeatedly checked the same area and saved several images.
No explanation was given at the time. I was simply told to wait for the results.
July 26 – My Results Arrived
The cervical cancer screening was normal.
However, my breast screening result said:
“Category 3 lesion. Please undergo further examination as soon as possible.”
I was completely shocked.
I had been healthy my entire life.
I couldn’t stop thinking,
“What if it’s cancer?”
“What will happen to my children?”
Every day I searched online and even asked AI countless questions because I was so anxious.
July 28 – Follow-up Examination
At the hospital, I first had a mammogram.
A mammogram is an X-ray designed to detect tiny calcifications and other early signs of breast cancer.
In my case, no obvious lump appeared on the mammogram.
Next, I had a fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC).
A very thin needle is inserted into the lesion to collect cells, which are then examined under a microscope to determine whether they are benign or malignant.
Two samples were collected.
I’m extremely nervous around needles.
After the procedure, I experienced a vasovagal reaction. I became dizzy, lost strength in my arms and legs, and fainted.
The staff kindly helped me into a wheelchair and let me rest in bed for about 15 minutes.
August 4 – The Results
Five days later, the hospital called.
“Your results are ready. Please come whenever it’s convenient.”
Although I already had plans, I was so anxious that I went to the hospital just 15 minutes later.
Class II(陰性)
The results were…
Classification: Normal or Benign
Class II (Negative)
No obvious atypical cells were found.
The doctor simply recommended another checkup in one year.
Good Health Is Never Something to Take for Granted
I felt an overwhelming sense of relief.
For one week, I couldn’t truly relax.
I kept wondering…
“What if it’s cancer?”
“What will happen to my children?”
“Will I be able to keep working?”
“How will we afford treatment?”
Those thoughts stayed with me day and night.
This experience reminded me that good health is never guaranteed.
At the same time, many people in Kumamoto are still unable to live their normal lives because of the recent earthquake.
Being able to live an ordinary day is truly something to be grateful for.
From now on, I want to treasure each and every day.
