Japanese Culture – Hinamatsuri (Doll Festival)

March 3rd is Hinamatsuri, also known as the Doll Festival. It’s a special celebration in Japan, wishing for the healthy growth and happiness of young girls.

What is Hinamatsuri?

Families display Hina dolls, decorate with peach blossoms, and enjoy traditional treats like hishi mochi (diamond-shaped rice cakes) and hina arare (sweet rice crackers). This festival is typically celebrated until around elementary school graduation.

Katsuura Big Hinamatsuri Festival

From late February to March 3rd, the city of Katsuura hosts a grand Hinamatsuri event, transforming the entire area into a dazzling display of Hina dolls.

One of the highlights is the steep stone staircase of Tomisaki Shrine, where nearly 1,800 Hina dolls are beautifully arranged. You can also see these dolls displayed throughout the city, from temples and shrines to shops and even post offices!

This event reflects the deep love for Japanese traditions and the warm hospitality of the local people, who welcome visitors with open arms.
