Omiya-mairi

A Traditional Japanese Ceremony for Newborns

Omiya-mairi is a traditional Japanese ritual where parents visit a shrine to express gratitude for their baby’s birth and pray for their healthy growth.

The timing varies by region, but traditionally:

👶 Baby boys visit the shrine on their 31st day

👧 Baby girls visit on their 32nd day

Super Fast & Popular! Kimono Rental for Visitors

This time, we rented a kimono for the occasion.

We chose Eiko, a rental and dressing service located on Naritasan Omotesando Street. They have a wide selection of kimonos and accessories, including a variety of obi belts to choose from.

👘 Lots of options for children’s kimonos too!

The dressing process was incredibly fast, taking only about 15 minutes, including hairstyling!

💡 Bonus: The owner speaks English, making it perfect for first-time kimono wearers. If you’re traveling near Narita Airport, why not take a little time to try on a kimono before heading home? If you’ve always wanted to experience wearing one, I highly recommend checking it out!

Habu Shrine Visit & Blessing Ceremony

At the reception, we offered the Hatsuhoryo (monetary offering), which we had prepared in advance.

Then, we received a purification blessing and were given a special red seal called “Ayatsuko.”

This seal is a protective charm believed to ward off evil.

Sacred Gifts from the Ceremony

After the prayer ceremony, we received the following items to take home:

🍵 Yokan – A traditional Japanese sweet bean jelly

🧧 Omamori – A protective amulet

🧼 Soap – Blessed for good health

📜 Ofuda – A sacred talisman for worship at home

🥤 Amazake – A sweet fermented rice drink, made from koji mold and glutinous rice

📖 Shinto Blessing Book – A booklet about Shinto traditions
