Japanese Obon お盆の過ごし方

日本には、8月の中旬にお盆という、一般的にはお仕事が長い休みに入ります。

その休みには海外へ旅行する人もいますが、田舎へ帰る人もいます。

今回は日本のお盆の過ごし方について、紹介します。

In Japan, people generally take a long break from work in mid-August called Obon.

During that vacation, some people travel abroad, while others return to the countryside.

In this article, we will introduce how to spend Obon in Japan.

お盆とは (what is Japanese Obon?)

お盆とは、先祖様を家に迎え入れてもてなし、自分達が今ここにあることへの感謝を伝える先祖供養の行事のこと。

田舎へ帰り、家族皆んながお土産を持ち寄り、ご飯を一緒に食べたり、近況を報告しあったりします。遠い場合だと、お泊まりをすることもあります。

 

Obon is an event to welcome ancestors into one’s home, to entertain them, and to express gratitude for their presence in one’s life.

The family returns to the countryside, bringing souvenirs, eating together, and reporting on recent events. In some cases, people may stay overnight if they are far away from home.

迎え火(welcome fire)

盆の入りや迎え盆などと呼ばれるお盆の初日、8月(地域などによっては7月)13日の夕方に焚くのが一般的です。 玄関先や庭先、お墓などの場所でおがら(皮を剥いた麻の茎)火を点けて燃やします。

なぜ燃やすの?

⇨ご先祖様の魂が迷わず自宅へ帰ってくるための目印になるから。

The fire is usually lit on the evening of the 13th day of August (or July, depending on the region), the first day of the Bon Festival, also known as Bon-no-iri (the beginning of the Bon Festival) or Okare-bon (welcoming the spirits of the dead). Ogara (peeled hemp stalks) are lit on fire and burned at the entrance, in the garden, or at graves.

Why do we burn them?

⇨Because it is a marker for the souls of ancestors to return to their homes without getting lost.

送り火(okuribi)

ご先祖様の魂があの世へまっすぐ戻れるよう、お見送りのために焚きます。

Bonfires to send off the spirits of ancestors

This is burned to send off the souls of ancestors so that they can return straight to the other world.

The photo shows electric lanterns for safety.

(There are various ways of doing this depending on the region and religious sect.)

お供えもの(offering)

仏壇を霊の乗り物である精霊馬をナスやキュウリなどで作り

盆棚には水や果物、野菜、キュウリや茄子に割り箸を刺して、馬や牛をかたどったものをつくって供えます。

キュウリは馬、ナスは牛。

馬で早く帰って来て、牛でゆっくりあの世に戻る。そんな意味があると私は教えられ、小さな頃から割り箸を刺す係を任されていました

お花は、うちでは外に畑がありそこにお花が咲いているのでそこのお花で花束を作りますが、一般的にはホームセンターやお花屋さんでこういったお花を買います。

Buddhist altars are decorated with eggplants, cucumbers, etc., as spirit horses, which are vehicles for the spirits.

On the Bon Festival shelf, offerings of water, fruits, vegetables, cucumbers and eggplants with disposable chopsticks are made in the shape of a horse or cow.

Cucumbers are horses and eggplants are cows.

The horse is used to return home early, and the cow is used to return slowly to the other side of the world. I was taught that it has such a meaning, and from the time I was a small child, I was in charge of sticking disposable chopsticks into the eggplant and cucumber.

For flowers, we have a field outside our house where flowers are in bloom, so we make bouquets with them.

お盆時期のフルーツ(Obon season fruit)

梨やぶどうが定番です。

梨は甘みが強く、便秘や高血圧の改善や予防ができるそうです。子どもも好きでよく食べます。形は、月のように切るのが一般的です。

ぶどうは、ご先祖さまも好きで近くにぶどう園があるので毎年買いに行きます。

そこでは試食を2種類くれて、とても親切でサービスが良いです。

種がなく、皮ごと食べられる美味しいぶどうです。

シャインマスカットと巨峰を買いました。

Fruits during the Bon Festival

Pears and grapes are the standard.

Pears are sweet and can improve or prevent constipation and high blood pressure. Children also like them and eat them often. The shape is usually cut like the moon.

Grapes are also a favorite of my ancestors. There is a vineyard nearby, so we go there every year to buy grapes.

There, they give us two kinds of tasting, and the service is very kind and good.

They are delicious grapes that have no seeds and can be eaten with the skin.

I bought some Shine Muscat and Kyoho grapes.


日本には、昔からご先祖さまに感謝を伝える行事があります。地域などで全く違うこともあります。今はどんどんそのような行事も縮小されてきていますが、私は大事にしたいなと思っています。

In Japan, there is a traditional event to express gratitude to ancestors. It can be totally different in different regions and so on. Nowadays, such events are being reduced more and more, but I would like to cherish them.
