What is Inari Sushi?

Inari sushi, or “Oinari-san,” is a type of sushi made by filling seasoned tofu pockets with vinegared rice.

The name comes from Inari, the Japanese god of rice and harvest. Rice, known as “the root of life,”has long been sacred in Japan. Originally, fried tofu (abura-age) was offered to Inari, and over time, it evolved into Inari sushi.

Did you know that the shape of Inari sushi differs by region?

✨ In Eastern Japan (Kanto), it’s oval-shaped, representing a bountiful harvest.

✨ In Western Japan (Kansai), it’s triangular, symbolizing a fox’s ears, as foxes are believed to be Inari’s messengers.

Inari sushi is a popular bento item and is often served as a side dish with udon noodles in Japan!

Ingredients (Kanto-Style Inari Sushi)

I was born and raised in Kanto, so today I’ll be making the Kanto-style Inari sushi!

🥢 Seasoned tofu pockets

🍚 Rice

🍶 Vinegar

🍯 Sugar

🧂 Salt

How to Make Inari Sushi

① Prepare the sushi rice – Mix vinegar, sugar, and salt into freshly cooked rice.

💡 Tip: Quickly cool the rice while mixing, using a fan for the best texture!

② Open the seasoned tofu pockets and gently stuff them with sushi rice.

③ Be careful not to tear them! Pack the rice firmly but gently.

④ Fold the opening slightly and place it face down to naturally seal the pocket.

日本のローカルフード稲荷寿司

お稲荷様とは、稲に関する神様です。

そもそも、稲は「命の根」を意味します。

お供え物として使われていた油揚げに酢飯を詰めたものが、次第に「いなり寿司」や「おいなりさん」と呼ばれるようになりました。お稲荷さんの形は、関東では俵形、関西では三角形が一般的です。関東では豊作を意味し、関西では狐の耳を表していると言われています!

 

材料

私は関東生まれ、関東育ちなので今回は関東風もお稲荷さんを作っていきます!

・お稲荷さんの味付け皮

・ご飯

・酢

・砂糖

・塩

 

レシピ

①炊いたご飯に、酢、砂糖、塩を混ぜた調味料液を加え、混ぜる。

(急激に冷ますことが大事なのでうちわなどで風を送りながら作ることが多い。)

②味のついている油揚げの皮を広げ、ご飯を詰めていく。

③破れないようにしながら、しっかり詰める。

④入り口のほうは軽くたたみ、下にすると自然と閉じる。

手軽に作れて、手軽に食べられる「お稲荷さん」。

子どもから大人まで大人気です!
