Making Shiratama Dango with Kids Easy Japanese Dessert Recip
Just Knead and Shape!
Fun Shiratama Dango with Kids! 🍡👦👧
Summer break is here, and it’s way too hot outside—there’s even a heatstroke alert! ☀️🥵 So, here’s a fun indoor activity idea for you and your kids: making colorful shiratama dango (chewy rice flour dumplings)!
🥣 What You’ll Need
✔ Shiratama flour (glutinous rice flour)
✔ Silken tofu
✔ Food coloring (red, green, yellow)
✔ Kinako (roasted soybean flour)
✔ Kuromitsu (Japanese brown sugar syrup)
⚠️ As always, I don’t measure exactly—I just eyeball it! 😂
👩🍳 How to Make It
1️⃣ Add shiratama flour to a bowl (I used about 90g, half a pack).
2️⃣ Mix in 1/3 block of silken tofu.
3️⃣ Knead until smooth, making sure there are no grainy bits left.
→ The dough should feel like an earlobe! (If it’s too soft, add more flour. If it’s too hard, add more water or tofu.)
4️⃣ Divide the dough into four parts for coloring.
5️⃣ Mix in a tiny bit of food coloring to each portion. (Be careful, a little goes a long way! 🎨)
6️⃣ Shape the dough into any fun shapes you like and drop them into boiling water.
7️⃣ Once they float to the surface, they’re done! Scoop them out and place them in ice water to cool. ❄️

8️⃣ Pat them dry with kitchen paper and transfer to a plate.
9️⃣ Sprinkle with kinako and drizzle with kuromitsu… and voilà! Enjoy your homemade dango! 🍡✨

🍵 Japanese Sweets + Tea = The Perfect Combo!
Shiratama dango pairs perfectly with a cup of Japanese tea! 🍵💛 Plus, since we used tofu, it’s healthier than regular dango. Win-win! 🙌
It took us about an hour to make, so it’s a fun and relaxing activity to enjoy with kids!
What are some traditional sweets from your country? I’d love to hear about them! 🌏💕
