Shichi-Go-San: A Traditional Japanese Celebration

Shichi-Go-San is a traditional Japanese ceremony that has been celebrated for generations. This year, my daughter reached the special age for Shichi-Go-San, so I’d love to share our experience with you!

What is Shichi-Go-San?

On November 15th, children who turn 3, 5, or 7 years old visit their local Shinto shrine to give thanks for their healthy growth and pray for continued well-being.

Our Visit to Naritasan Shinshoji Temple

At the shrine, we registered for the ceremony and made a monetary offering (hatsuhoryo).

Prayer Ceremony Schedule at Naritasan

We gathered at the main hall at the designated time, where a special prayer ceremony was held for the children.

Shichi-Go-San Souvenirs & Blessings

After the ceremony, we received souvenirs based on the offering amount.

🎁 Amulets (Omamori) – For protection and good fortune

🎁 Blessing Talisman (Ofuda) – Placed in the home’s kamidana (household shrine)

🍬 Chitose Ame – Long, thin candy symbolizing a long and healthy life

🏅 Commemorative Medal – A keepsake for this special day

Since welcoming the gods is an important part of this tradition, the blessing talisman (Ofuda) is placed in the household shrine.

Kimono Dressing & Photoshoot

We had our daughter’s kimono fitting and photoshoot at Studio Alice.

Recently, modern kimono colors like gray and brown have become popular, but the classic red kimono is still the most traditional and beloved choice.

After a long, eventful day, she was completely exhausted and fell asleep on the way home!

Shichi-Go-San is a beautiful Japanese tradition that celebrates children’s milestones. I hope you enjoyed reading about our experience!
